Should I buy a Window AC or a Split AC has been the most asked question when it comes to buying an AC. It is a fact that the more and more choices we get, difficult it gets to narrow it down to 1 product.
Hence, rather than stressing on the fact which one to buy, there’s a bunch of things that the user needs to understand before making a choice.
Let’s say you are going to buy a gift for someone you love, but you can’t make a perfect choice unless you know exactly what does he or she likes or further segregation into habits or patterns, right?
Similarly, before making this decision Split AC vs Window AC, it’s evident to break it down to different sections such as which AC should be considered as per your room size, what is the right capacity or AC tonnage, how does EER impact your AC’s performance, Star Ratings etc.
a). What is EER, ISEER & BEE Rating?
With millions of products available in the market, there should be some parameters to gauge the performance and efficiency amongst each other so consumer can make their choice. This is why, when you buy an electrical appliance such as AC, Refrigerator, Geyser etc you will see a “Power Savings Guide“ sticker.
On this sticker, you will see number of things to take a note of such as EER, Star Ratings etc. These ratings are assigned by Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE). BEE is a statutory body under the Government of India established & their role is to promote efficient use of energy and its conservation.
What is EER: EER stands for Energy Efficiency Ratio. In other words, the way AC unit works is by removing the heat from the room. EER here means amount of heat removed in an hour divided by power consumed by it. So, the more heat that gets removed in an hour gives a higher EER which is the signal for high efficiency of that unit.
Every AC comes with a range of EER which is defined by the Star ratings of that AC. Higher the EER goes, more money you can save. This image will give you an idea.

What is ISEER: India is lucky to have different weather patterns and there are many more countries like India on this planet. But, with changing weathers and temperature, how do you put everything into one category for ex, you might not need your AC to run at 24 degrees in winters but in summers.
Keeping this in mind, SEER or the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio was introduced in India on 24th August 2016. SEER along with the prefix Indian is known as ISEER (Indian Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio).
Be advised that the basic concepts of EER and ISEER are the same. The only difference is the seasonal factoring because of changing weather patterns.
What is BEE Rating: As in schools, someone who gets the higher marks or grades used to get higher ratings or in corporate, annual ratings at year-end makes a difference to your increment.
Similarly, in India BEE sets the standards, labels & provide a star-rating to various appliances. These star ratings are given out of 5 where higher the rating, lower is the energy consumption.

b). Sizing the Room & AC
Performance of the AC highly depends on the room size and capacity of your AC. If you have ended up buying a 1 ton AC for a drawing room or lobby which is more than 200 sq ft in size, your AC will always underperform trying to bring the temperature as per the room size and thereby compressor will never be able to cope.
Not only the performance will go down, your electricity bills be high as compressor is always running. At the same time, installing a 1.5 ton AC for an 80 sq ft room will result in over cooling of the room and you will not feel comfortable most of the time.

Number of people in the room: Too many people in the room and you will definitely notice the impact on cooling. If you think that’s a factor with you, go up a notch in tonnage and instead of getting 1 ton as per room size, choose 1.5 ton.
Number of electrical appliances: Cooling of the AC is inversely proportional to the number of heat emission appliances being used in the room. This doesn’t mean you cannot install AC in a room with TV or lights, etc. Just ensure to use fewer lights and you will see the impact in cooling.
Sources of ventilation: Even AC as a unit needs a well ventilated room as well-insulated windows reduce cooling load.
Colors in the room: Imagine wearing a black shirt and black jeans and going at 1 PM to Central Park, Connaught Place, will that make you look cool? Absolutely not, dark colors absorb more heat and same is the way AC works. Dark curtains, dark wall colors & even the dark clothes will make a difference inside the room.
